Last night, Bob Brookmeyer passed away just a few days shy of his 82nd birthday. Bob was an incredible trombonist, composer, arranger and educator, but most importantly to me, he was my friend. I’ve known Bob for about eight years now, starting out as his student at the New England Conservatory, then working with him as an assistant and copyist. Eventually the boundaries of “titles” faded away, leaving just a loving and enduring friendship that I hold very dear to my heart. Though I will miss Bob dearly, he will forever be a constant presence in my heart, mind and most importantly, my ears. His influence on jazz composition will be something that people will continually be discovering for generations to come.
Bob, all I can say at this point is thank you. Your guidance, support and love has shaped me into the musician I am today. Though you always were and will be my teacher, I feel lucky to be amongst the privileged to call you first and foremost my friend. You have stretched my ears far beyond any point I would have found on my own and have taught me more about music than I can express here. Bob, thank you. And as we said many times, but in times like these it never seems enough – much love to you, my friend.

I’m excited to announce the launch of the Gil Evans Centennial Project! I will be recording an album of newly-discovered, never-before recorded works of Gil’s in celebration of his 100th birthday in 2012. The whole process will be documented through ArtistShare®, so please check it out and participate in making this music come to life!
I’ve been offered the great opportunity to produce an upcoming recording with the Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) Big Band featuring Bob Brookmeyer, playing both new and old music of Bob’s. The recording will be happening at the NDR studios in Hamburg, Germany in early December. We’ll be there for two weeks to cover rehearsals, recording, mixing and mastering.
